Natural Performance Enhancer
The Most Natural Performance Enhancer…Sleep
By Mike Caza,
CSCS Director of Performance
Have you ever thought about the impact a good nights sleep can have on your athletic performance? Below are some reasons why sleep is vital to becoming a better athlete:
Sleep and replenishment of glycogen
Deprivation of sleep (less than 4-6 hours a night) can cause the body to replenish lost glycogen stores less eficiently. Glucose and glycogen is the body's primary source of energy for most sports. The body's inability to replenish these stores will result in a decrease in muscular efficiency and regeneration. This decrease in muscular performance can significantly increase the athletes' chance for injury.
Sleep and it's affect on the recovery process
Studies have shown that lack of sleep can increase the bodies stress hormone and decrease the human growth hormone (HGH). HGH is released naturally by the anterior pituitary gland, which is closely involved with the rebuilding of broken down muscle tissue due to training.
How much sleep do I need?
Establish a schedulle that allows you to receive 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep every day of the week.
Benefits of adequate amounts of sleep
- Increased muscle efficiency
- Decreased chance of injuries
- Better muscle quality and heallth
- Improved reaction time and sustained attention
- Improved mood during training and competitions
- Increased cardiovascular performance
