Core Strength

Why Is Core Strength So Important for Sport Movements?

By Mike Caza,
CSCS Director of Performance

Consider the location of your core muscles.

Your core consists of abdominals and gluteus muscles that create stability for your spine and hips. These muscles signifiicantly influence many of our biomechanical movements in our sports such as running, jumping, throwing, striking and cutting.

Why is it important for my hips and spine to have stability?

When you have a healthy spine with optimal muscular strength and flexiibility, your lumbar region serves as a foundation from which lower and upper extremity movement and function can occur. When muscle imbalances exist, your resulting movement is less effiicient and excess stresses can be placed on otherwise healthy structures.

What happens if my core muscles are unbalanced or overall weak?

Muscular imbalances and weakness contribute to faulty biomechanics during sports movements and increase the risk for injuries. For example, weak core muscles may result in improper running mechanics that can increase the potentiall for ankle sprains, shin splints, back pain and knee injuries.
